This document provides an overview of the ISO 10303 series of parts.
The ISO 10303 series provides a representation of product information along with the necessary mechanisms and definitions to enable product data to be exchanged. The exchange is among different computer systems and environments associated with the complete product life cycle, including product design, manufacture, use, maintenance, and final disposition of the product.
This document defines the basic principles of product information representation and exchange used in the ISO 10303 series of parts. It specifies the characteristics of the various sets of parts of ISO 10303 and the relationships among them.

— overview of the ISO 10303 series;
— architectures of the ISO 10303 series of parts;
— structure of the ISO 10303 series of parts;

This document specifies requirements for data to be portable data. The following are within the scope
of this document:
— fundamental principles and assumptions for portable data;
— the role of semantic encoding in making data portable;
— the syntax of a structured format for portable data;
— the metadata and the reference data to include as part of portable data.
The following are outside the scope of this document:
— the information to be represented by the structured data format.
