This document specifies a test procedure for preparation of test prints on paper, board, metals, foils and other suitable substrates using paste inks, such as for offset and letterpress printing, using electrically driven IGT-type and Prüfbau-type printability testers. The test prints serve for optical tests, such as colorimetry, transparency, gloss and optical density as well as for testing other print related paper and ink properties, such as striking-in/setting, mottling, ink transfer, picking etc., where a well-known ink coverage in g/m2 or in optical density on the substrate is required before any other evaluations or further testing can take place. For different test purposes different ink film thicknesses or optical densities and other test specifications will be specified in the referring standard, this document describes only the procedure used to print the sample. For further evaluations other standards may be required.

This standard describes the procedure for reference optical density and reference ink film thickness.

Note - This standard describes the method as used on the current models of testers, most of the described procedures will also be applicable in analogy to the older models but may require additional steps to be executed or recalculation of the settings to make them conform to this standard. It is important to contact the supplier to confirm compliance with this document before using it for inking and testing. Devices of (very) old age or of non-standard construction.

This part of ISO 16612 defines the PDF/VT-3 document format and methods to enable reliable document exchange for variable data and transactional (VT) printing. It uses the Portable Document Format (PDF) Version 2.0, as restricted by PDF/X-6, for the representation of such documents. It allows the specification of document structure and layout, content data, and interaction of graphics objects in a graphics model that supports transparency and both device-dependent and device-independent colour spaces. All elements are either included or provision is made for unique identification of externally supplied ICC profiles.

PDF/VT-3 is designed to enable variable data and transactional printing in a variety of environments from desktop printers to digital production presses. This includes hybrid workflows involving both conventional and digital printing.

This part of ISO 15930 specifies the use of ISO 32000-2:2020 (PDF 2.0) for the dissemination of digital data intended for print reproduction. When all elements necessary for final print reproduction are contained within the file, it is designated as PDF/X-6. If any ICC profile associated with any PDF/X output intent is externally supplied then the file is designated as PDF/X-6p for gray, RGB or CMYK-based profiles or PDF/X-6n for n-colorant profiles.

Colour-managed, CMYK, gray, RGB or spot colour data are supported, as are PDF transparency and optional content. Files can be prepared for use with gray, RGB, CMYK or n-colourant printing characterizations.

Any type of annotation, including form fields, video and audio content, can be present in the printable area of a page.
