This document specifies a method for the quantification of selected phenolic compounds by high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPHC-FLD) using intense ISO 20778 smoking parameters. The selected phenolic compounds are: hydroquinone, resorcinol, catechol, phenol, p-cresol, m-cresol and o-cresol.

This method is applicable to cigarettes with nicotine-free dry particulate matter (NFDPM) yields between 1 mg/cigarette and 15 mg/cigarette.

This method is applicable to cigarettes with nicotine-free dry particulate matter (NFDPM) yields between 1 mg/cigarette and 15 mg/cigarette. It is not applicable for the determination of ammonia in dark-air cured cigarettes.
